About: What Yarn is Made Of

My reference: Stitch 'N Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook

Acrylic: plastic. Tends to be inexpensive and easy to wash (think items for pets and children).

Alpaca: from an alpaca (llama-ish animal). Super warm. Good for winter accessories, but might be a bit toasty for sweaters & such.

Angora: rabbits. Sheds a lot, very fine & fluffy. Best as a blend or an accent.

Cashmere: belly-hair of cashmere goats. Soft, fluffy & pricey.

Cotton: light, absorbent, good for summer items. Not particularly stretchy.

Linen: flax fibers. Strong, cool, stiff and easily wrinkles.

Mohair: from the Angora goat. Itchy, so best for items not worn directly on the skin.

Silk: silkworm cocoons. Strong, shiny, expensive, and light. Think summer items.

Wool: sheep. Different kinds of sheep make for different kinds of wool. Merino wool is from Merino sheep and is cottony-soft, reasonably priced, tends to pill.
